Having scaring on your skin from acne can take a toll physically, emotionally, and socially. It may be something that you wish could just go away.
Finding natural remedies to help reduce the appearance of scars can help boost your self-esteem and make you feel more confident in your appearance.
Treating acne scars can also promote better skin health and make you more aware of how you care for pimples and acne breakouts.
Before I go into how to get rid of acne scars naturally, you first need to understand what acne scars are and what causes them.
What Are Acne Scars And What Causes Them
Acne scars can happen to anyone. They are usually the result of pores filled with excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. The pore swells, causing a break in the follicle wall. The skin is inflamed, forming a swollen and reddish blemish.
Shallow lesions are usually minor, heal quickly and don’t scar. If there is a deep break in the wall of the pore, the infected material will damage the skin and tissue surrounding it, creating deeper lesions such as acne cysts and nodules.
The skin attempts to repair these deep lesions by forming new collagen fibers. These repairs usually aren’t as smooth as the original skin.
Hypertrophic or keloid scarring:
These scars are caused when the body produces too much collagen as acne wounds heal, resulting in a mass of thickened, wide, and raised tissue on the surface of the skin.
The difference between hypertrophic and keloid scars:
Hypertrophic Scars Usually:
- are raised, but rarely more than 4 millimeters above the skin
- can develop anywhere on the body
- are red to pink in color
- have more success in the healing process than keloid scars
- are hard and itchy
Keloid Scars Usually:
- are raised more than 4 millimeters from the skin
- can grow beyond the boundaries of the original blemish
- form on the earlobes, shoulders, cheeks, and chest
- are pink to purple in color
- evolve and grow over time
- are a firm, rubbery lesion or shiny, fibrous nodule
- can have severe itchiness, pain, and changes in texture
Atrophic Or Depressed Scarring:
These scars develop when there is a loss of tissue. An atrophic scar is an indented scar that heals below the normal layer of skin tissue.
There are three common types of atrophic scarring:
- “Icepick” scars are usually small, yet obvious holes in the skin. They look like deep pores.
- “Boxcar” scars are depressed areas, usually round or oval in shape with steeply angled sides, similar to chickenpox scars. They have flat bottoms and defined borders.
- “Rolling” scars don’t have distinct edges and are usually found on the cheeks.
Acne Scars:
- Appear as deep pits or angular and wavelike
- When they penetrate the skin deeply, they damage the skin and tissue beneath it
- Picking, squeezing and popping acne causes more inflammation
- Genes can play a role in whether or not you are prone to acne and scarring
- They are a natural healing process of acne breakouts
- If the body produces too little or too much collagen, you can get a scar
- The type of scar that forms depends on how much collagen your body makes
If acne goes untreated, blemishes can become worse and cause scarring.
Don’t Do These Things While Treating Acne Scars
Here are some tips that you shouldn’t do while treating your acne scars. Things to avoid. Things not to do. And Things that will cause your acne scars to linger and not heal as quickly.
Don’t Pick At Scabs
Scabs are your body’s version of a band-aid. Picking off a scab repeatedly when a blemish is trying to heal will slow healing and can increase scarring.
Also, if you are picking with unwashed fingers, bacteria from your nails increase the risk of additional blemishes forming. This can lead to the development of a larger scar.
Be aware if you are mindlessly picking at your face during the day. Do everything you can to not pick at your scabs.
Don’t Overuse Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is everywhere it seems. In first aid products, in skin care products, and in acne spot treatments. It is a great antiseptic, but it can also be damaging if used too much.
It can cause further irritation and slow down the healing process if used too frequently.
Hydrogen peroxide will kill off bacteria and help start the healing process of a blemish. Applied once is enough. Don’t go overboard. Applying it multiple times won’t speed up the healing process so there is no reason to keep applying it.
Don’t Overcleanse Your Skin
Overcleansing your scarred areas can reduce skin elasticity. It also can make the appearance of the scars more prominent.
Overcleansing can be stripping, drying, and more damaging to your healing skin. You only need to cleanse once a day. Best at night and in the morning just rinse with water.
Don’t Use A Facial Scrub
Using a facial scrub can irritate the healing skin and delay the healing process. Be sure that you don’t use a harsh scrub on your acne scars.
You want to be gentle with your sensitive skin and give it time to heal and renew. Skip the exfoliating cleansers as well. Choose gentle skin care products that won’t slow down the healing process.
Do These Things While Treating Acne Scars
These are great tips that you should do while treating acne scars.
Do Let Acne Scars Heal Naturally
Be patient and give your skin time to heal. It may take time for an acne scar to diminish.
Using natural remedies to treat your acne scars, you can dramatically improve the appearance and depth of your scars.
A combination of your skins own healing abilities and using natural remedies will help get rid of acne scars.
Do Keep The Area Moist
If you are trying to get rid of acne scars, it’s best to keep the area moist while it heals. This may help prevent a scar from forming or keep a scar from getting too large, deep or itchy.
Some great natural choices are pure shea butter and coconut oil.
They are both very effective at moisturizing the skin and can be part of a continued skin care regimen to help minimize some scarring.
Apply shea butter and/or coconut oil to your skin two to three times a day.
Do Stay Out Of The Sun
Overexposure to the sun can darken your skin as well as your scars and make them look more prominent.
Always wear SPF or wear sun protection if you are going to be exposed to the sun for a long period of time.
Now for the good stuff! The reason you are reading this! Here are my favorite natural remedies to get rid of acne scars.
Natural Acne Scar Remedies
Scars can be hard to live with, especially if they are on your face for everyone to see.
These are my favorite preventive techniques for acne scarring as well as treatments for blemishes that have caused scarring. Keep in mind that it is best to treat acne right away to help minimize and prevent scarring.
Emu Oil
Emu oil has long been known to help kill bacteria and reduce inflammation. It is rich in omega fatty acids-omega-9, omega-6, and omega-3, which help you have a healthy glow. The fatty acids have the ability to penetrate deeply and are deeply moisturizing.
It is beneficial in treating inflammation and minimizing the appearance of scars, promoting the skin’s natural healing process, and keep your acne scars moist. (1)
Emu oil comes from the fast in the back of the emu bird. If you are against using animal byproducts, you may want to avoid using emu oil. The oil is extracted from emu’s that have been raised for meat production.
I was a vegetarian for a long time and I use emu oil on my scars. Years and years ago I was in a really bad bicycle crash. The right side of my face was wiped off. I applied tea tree and emu oil day and night and I have one tiny scar.
This stuff is legit.
Colloidal Silver
Colloidal Silver is an antibacterial, antiseptic, and skin healing. It helps damaged tissue to regenerate and helps with acne scars.
Colloidal silver destroys bacteria quickly and is capable of restoring scars.
Apply a few drops directly onto the affected skin using a cotton ball or bud. Apply two to three times a day to help reduce the appearance of acne scars.
I had a bad ingrown hair that was inflamed and scarred. I applied a mixture of tea tree oil, emu oil, and colloidal silver for a few weeks. The scar completely went away! I always have this blend in my medicine cabinet.
Rosehip Seed Oil
Rosehip oil is high in essential fatty acids. It helps to rejuvenate and soften skin damaged by scars. Only use on clear skin and not on skin that is acneic.
Massage rosehip oil on the affected area to help reduce acne scars. It should be applied with fingertips a few times a day. Use gentle, circular motions. Keep in mind that it may take weeks for results to show so don’t lose hope if it doesn’t happen overnight.
Rosehip oil can increase skin’s sun sensitivity so put on sunblock if you are going to be outdoors for a long period of time.
I use rosehip oil on a lot of clients to help with acne scarring. I swear by this stuff and love it.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is a mild astringent, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-rejuvenating, making it a great option for healing acne scars. It is comforting and hydrating, as well as help regenerate the damaged tissue by boosting the healing process.
Fresh gel from the leaves or the fresh bottled juice are both great choices to get rid of acne scars.
Apply aloe vera two or three times daily. Not only will your acne scars diminish, but you also may see a glow to your skin!
This a staple in my skin care routines at my spa. I spritz on as a toner, apply with lavender and tea tree oil after acne extractions, and use in my facial masks.
Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar contains malic acid and is a gentle, non-abrasive, exfoliating astringent. It is a natural disinfectant and an effective treatment of acne scars.
Apple cider vinegar can help eliminate dead skin cells which help it fade acne scars.
Mix raw apple cider vinegar with local honey; then, using a cotton ball or cosmetic pad, apply to the skin or affected area. Leave the mixture on for 10 minutes, and then rinse with warm water. You can do this two to three times a day.
I love apple cider vinegar and mix it into toners to help with acne scarring. Avoid on broken or acneic skin.
Tea Tree Essential Oil
Tea tree is antibacterial, antifungal and an antiviral. It helps heal acne, open wounds, infections, and blemishes.
Tea tree is effective in healing acne scars and is most beneficial in treating hypertrophic scars and can gradually diminish the appearance of scars.
Combine two to four drops of tea tree with jojoba oil and rub onto the affected area twice a day. Always apply in a carrier oil and never apply directly to the skin.
Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender is an antiseptic and has healing properties. It is great to treat acne and acne scars. It can help prevent scars from forming and is commonly used in caring for acne.
Apply a few drops of lavender to the scarred area two to three times a day either directly onto the skin or with a damp cloth. Be sure to rub the oil in gently to avoid irritation. Because this oil is so gentle, it can be applied directly to acne blemishes, minimizing the risk of them leaving long-term marks or scars.
Helichrysum Essential Oil
Helichrysum is an anti-inflammatory, skin cell regenerating, and has antifungal properties. If mixed with rosehip oil, it can help reduce the appearance of scar tissue.
It is also an antioxidant and helps prevent and regenerate damaged skin.
Mix a few drops into a bottle of rosehip oil and apply morning and night to acne scars. Always apply in a carrier oil and never apply directly to the skin.
